Bourbon

Went Fishing and got hooked on Dry Fly

Being from Washington (not D.C.), I’m excited to spend a little bit of time writing about the first legal bourbon ever made in my state, DryFly Bourbon 101. Washington is not necessarily known for its bourbon, though that is changing. Washington is more often associated with its apples, evergreen trees and beautiful mountain ranges. That being said, DryFly Distilling decided to grace our humble state and the rest of the US with a delightful bourbon that is sure to be a daily drinker. According to DryFly, they’re 101 bourbon has a mashbill of 55% corn and 45% triticale. A mashbill they say is a first for bourbon. Not being much of an agricultural person, I had to look up what “triticale” was; which is an engineered crop species combining wheat and rye. Additionally, this bourbon is aged in 53-gallon barrels for a minimum of 4 years.

Now on to the notes:

Color: medium to dark brown

Proof: 50.5% ALC/101 proof/long legs

I’ve had quite a bit of experience drinking different whiskies, but sitting down and seriously writing about them in an organized manner is something completely different; so please forgive any disorganization and undeveloped explanations of the whiskey…..I’m still training my nose and palate dammit!!! :)

Nose: Caramel, vanilla, dried fruit and corn

Palate: thick mouth feelings, with apple, smoke and wheat flavors combining together for a medium to long finish

I would certainly recommend DryFly Bourbon 101 and it has a reasonable price of $49.99. It’s not simply a bourbon you throwback at the end of a long day, but a bourbon you can sit down and take your time with; which I encourage because the more you do so, the more the characteristics of the bourbon start to come out and play.

I wanna say a big thanks to Jake Youst for consulting with me. You can follow him on IG @thetipsybarkeep and read his reviews @whiskeyconsensus
